Day 5: Pontevedra to Caldas de Rei - 23 km

Breakfast: 7 am
Route: Walk from Pontevedra to Caldas de Rei

Start Walk: Pontevedra
You leave Pontevedra, and our Camino runs mainly through eucalyptus and pine forests in the last days. Along today’s stage, you’ll see many “cruceros”, a typical Galician monument related to the “Santa Compaña”, a deep-rooted mythical belief in rural Galicia that suggests the presence of the dead in the world of the living. You must remember that Galicia is a land of “Meigas” (Meiga means witch in Galician). You’ll go through villages like Santa María de Alba and Agudelo, where you can visit the church of San Martín, dated to the 13th century. If you have free time in the afternoon to walk around Caldas de Rei, you can visit the church of Santa María de Caldas, influenced by Maestro Mateo, author of the Romanesque masterpiece “El Pórtico de la Gloria” in the Cathedral of Santiago.

Finish Walk: Caldas de Rei
Overnight Hotel: Caldas de Rei

Day 6: Caldas de Rei to Padrón - 19 Km

Breakfast: 7am
Route: Walk from Caldas de Rei to Padrón (19Km)

Start Walk: Caldas de Rei
In the village of Santa Marina de Carracedo, you’ll see the church, the parish house, and the “hórreos,” typical Galician granaries built of wood or stone and raised on pillars, mainly used to store potatoes, corn, cereal, and to dry meat. Upon reaching Padrón, you can visit this beautiful city, which is very important on the Camino de Santiago.  According to legend, the stone boat carrying the body of St. James arrived at the port of Padrón, and from there his disciples transferred the remains to their present location, Santiago de Compostela. Today, this region is also well known for the Padrón peppers, which grow from May to October.  They are small peppers fried in olive oil, and the interesting thing about them is that some are spicy and some others are not.

Finish Walk: Padrón
Overnight Hotel – Padrón

Day 7: Padrón to Santiago - 24 km

Breakfast: 7 am
Route: Walk from Padrón to Santiago

Start Walk: Padrón
This is our last stage before reaching our destination. First, we’ll pass by Iria Flavia, the ancient episcopal see.  You can visit the church.  The Nobel laureate Camilo José Cela was born here. We will pass through the villages of A Escravitude, Faramello and Milladoiro before reaching Santiago. Upon arrival in Santiago, you’ll visit the city, especially the Cathedral and the old town. In the city, you can also visit interesting museums such as the Cathedral Museum and the Pilgrim Museum, or climb to the Cathedral roof. Now you can rest in Santiago after all that walking.

Finish Walk: Santiago de Compostela
Overnight Hotel – Santiago

  • Break in your walking boots and socks to prevent blisters. It is also a good idea to have worn any clothing on long walks before you travel to make sure they are comfortable.
  • Bring runners or ideally flip-flops for evening time to give your feet a chance to breathe & recover
  • Pack a sports bottle & fill it each morning before you leave the hotel at breakfast
  • Bring spare (dry!) socks in your backpack
  • Get your pilgrim passport stamped in hotels, shops & restaurants along the Way. You must have walked 100km in order to receive your Compostela certificate of completion in Santiago.

  • Buy a scallop shell on your first day & attach it to your rucksack
  • A poncho is fantastic for any wet days to keep you, your clothing & your bag dry
