About This Walk
Cross the dramatic Maragatería mountains, visit the mountain peak of Cruz de Ferro, and climb over the breathtaking mountain pass of O Cebreiro into Galicia. Starting from historic Astorga, this stage combines high mountain scenery, stone hamlets, rich vineyards in El Bierzo, and ancient Galician forests before reaching Sarria.

Day 1: Arrive in Astorga
Arrive in historic Astorga. Explore Gaudí’s Episcopal Palace and enjoy local Maragato cuisine before starting your mountain journey tomorrow.

Day 2: Astorga to Rabanal del Camino
Walk from Astorga to Rabanal del Camino (20 km)
Ascend gently toward the León mountains, passing peaceful stone hamlets like Santa Catalina de Somoza and El Ganso before reaching Rabanal del Camino.
Overnight: Rabanal del Camino
Day 3: Rabanal del Camino to Molinaseca
Walk from Rabanal del Camino to Molinaseca (25 km)
Reach Cruz de Ferro (1,500 m) at the mountain peak before beginning the scenic descent past El Acebo and Riego de Ambrós into the charm of Molinaseca.
Overnight: Molinaseca
Day 4: Molinaseca to Villafranca del Bierzo
Walk from Molinaseca to Villafranca del Bierzo (31 km)
Walk past the Templar Castle in Ponferrada and continue across the wine region of El Bierzo into the historic town of Villafranca del Bierzo.
Overnight: Villafranca del Bierzo
Day 5: Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro
Walk from Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro (28 km)
Follow the Valcarce River valley before tackling the steady mountain climb into Galicia, finishing in the fairytale stone village of O Cebreiro.
Overnight: O Cebreiro
Day 6: O Cebreiro to Triacastela
Walk from O Cebreiro to Triacastela (21 km)
Walk along mountain ridges past Alto do Poio (1,335 m) with sweeping views of the Galician countryside before descending into Triacastela.
Overnight: Triacastela
Day 7: Triacastela to Sarria
Walk from Triacastela to Sarria (18 km)
Choose between the scenic valley route via Samos (famous for its ancient monastery) or the direct route through San Xil before arriving in Sarria.
Overnight: Sarria
Day 8: Departure from Sarria
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before check-out. Onward transfers or continuous travel to Santiago can be arranged through UWalk.

Can I combine Stage 4 and Stage 5 into one continuous trip?
Yes! Stage 4 finishes in Astorga and Stage 5 begins in Astorga, making it seamless to chain both stages together. You can also extend directly from Sarria to Santiago (Stage 6).

How does daily luggage transfer work?
Your main suitcase or duffel bag (1 piece per person, max 20 kg) is transferred directly between your accommodations each day. Simply leave your labeled bag at hotel reception by 8:00 AM, and it will be waiting at your next hotel by early afternoon.

What should I carry during the day?
A light 20–30L daypack is all you need. Pack 1.5L of water, daily snacks, sun protection, a light waterproof jacket, warm layers for the mountain passes, your Pilgrim Passport (Credencial), and cash/cards for local cafes along the trail.

Which airports are best for Stage 5?
For arrival in Astorga, fly into Madrid (MAD) or Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) with bus/train links to Astorga. For departure from Sarria, train or bus links connect to Santiago (SCQ), A Coruña (LCG), or Madrid (MAD). Private driver transfers are available on request.
