Camino Portuguese Stage 1

About This Walk

Stage 1 of the Portuguese route leads from Porto to Tui – the town located on the border between Portugal and Spain, or better to say Spanish Galicia. Here you will experience one week of trekking through the Northern Portugal. Green forests and hills, historical towns and villages – Portugal like you never imagined it.

Day 1:

Arrive Porto for Overnight Stay

Walk around the old city of Porto and visit to the Cathedral. Here begins our walk to Tui.

Day 2:

Porto to Arcos (32 Km)

Consider taking public transport to Maia to avoid a busy road. The walk is 24 Km to Arcos from there.

Day 3:

Arcos to Barcelos (20 Km) 

In Pedro de Rates we can visit the Romanesque church with its beautiful main facade. You will walk through the small villages of Pedra Furada and Pereira to Barcelos. This city is famous for its legend of the rooster. You still have time to have a walk around this interesting city full of churches and a beautiful main square.

Day 4:

Barcelos – Ponte da Lima (33 Km)

Along the camino you’ll see Vila Boa and you’ll reach Alto da Portela through a beautiful countryside landscape until Ponte das Taboas with its symbolic bridge dated to the 13th century. There is accommodation along this walk between Barcelos and Ponte da Lima, as it is quite long this walk can be split or a taxi can be taken part of the way.

Day 5:

Ponte da Lima – Rubiaes (18 Km)

Although today’s stage is very nice as it runs through forests and vineyards, it is quite tough and uphill almost all of the time. Leaving Ponte de Lima we go across a Roman bridge and we’ll see again the famous Quintas (villas).  From Labruja you find an ascent but with beautiful views.

Day 6:

Rubiaes – Tui (20 Km)

After several days in Portugal, today you have our last stage in the neighbouring country and walking across the bridge over the river Miño we reach Galicia.  First you have an ascent to Sao Benito.  In Fontoura you can visit the church of Sao Miguel.  In this village stayed the Queen Isabella of Portugal when he made a pilgrimage to Santiago.  You continue your way to Valenca do Minho, where you can visit its citadel before crossing the river into Spain. In the afternoon you arrive in the pretty town of Tui. It is important to highlight the Romanesque cathedral of Santa María.
