Camino Frances Stage 4

About This Walk

This 4th stage follows the natural tracks along the old Roman road called ‘Via Aquitania’. The ‘Via Aquitania’ used to link Bordeaux and Astorga and was frequently used by French pilgrims on their way to Santiago. On reaching Astorga, pilgrims can visit the Cathedral of Santa María, the Episcopal Palace of Gaudí or the city council and enjoy some shopping in this thriving city.

  • Enjoy a shorter route on Day 3 as you travel through Bercianos del Real Camino
  • Explore the magnificent city of León with its Cathedral, the Basilica de San Isidoro, the Parador “Hostal San Marcos”, (nowadays a Parador) and the Casa de los Botines de Gaudí.
  • See the statue of “Santiago Matamoros” (St James “the Moor Slayer”) in Villadangos del Páramo
  • In Astorga, visit the the Cathedral of Santa María
  • Visit the Episcopal Palace of Astorga designed in the Catalan Modernisme style by the architect Gaudí

Calzadilla to Astorga

Day 1 – Arrive Calzadilla

Day 2:

Calzadilla to Sahagun (21Km)

We are in the plateau and we’ll see many different Castilian villages before reaching Sahagún. There, we can visit the church of San Tirso and San lorenzo in Mudejar style.

Day 3

Sahagun to Burgo Ranero (18Km)

Today’s relatively short stage stays close to the N120 and through Bercianos del Real Camino.

Day 4:

Burgo Ranero to Mansilla (19Km)

On route and a little more than half way you pass through the village of Reliegos.

Day 5:

Mansilla de las Mulas to León, (18Km)

Across the bridge Puente Castro dated to the 13th century over the river Esla, you finally reach León. In León you will have the opportunity to visit this stunning city, above all the Cathedral, the Basilica de San Isidoro, the Hostal San Marcos (nowadays a Parador) or the Casa de los Botines de Gaudí.

Day 6:

León to Astorga, (46Km) (Part of this route will include a transfer)

On leaving Leon you head towards the village La Virgen del Camino, where you have two options. One passes through Villadangos del Páramo and the other one through Mazarife. Both variants are nice but the route through Villar de Mazarife is not really well marked.

Walking through San Martín del Camino you’ll reach Hospital de Órbigo, site of knight battles which are nowadays commemorated in a local festivity.

On reaching Astorga, you can visit the Cathedral of Santa María, the Episcopal Palace of Gaudí or the city council.
