About This Walk
Follow the ancient Roman road known as the Vía Aquitana, which historically connected Bordeaux and Astorga. This 4th stage takes you across the plains of Castilla y León through medieval towns like Sahagún and Mansilla, into the Gothic city of León, and onward through Hospital de Órbigo to ending in historic Astorga.

Day 1: Arrive in Calzadilla de la Cueza
Arrive in Calzadilla de la Cueza. Check into your accommodation and prepare for your walk along the ancient Roman road.

Day 2: Calzadilla de la Cueza to Sahagún
Walk from Calzadilla de la Cueza to Sahagún (21 km)
Walk across the Castilian plateau, passing rural hamlets before reaching Sahagún. Explore the town’s famed Mudéjar-style churches.
Overnight: Sahagún
Day 3: Sahagún to El Burgo Ranero
Walk from Sahagún to El Burgo Ranero (18 km)
Enjoy a shorter walking day staying close to the trail through Bercianos del Real Camino to El Burgo Ranero.
Overnight: El Burgo Ranero
Day 4: El Burgo Ranero to Mansilla de las Mulas
Walk from El Burgo Ranero to Mansilla de las Mulas (19 km)
Continue along peaceful tracks, passing through the village of Reliegos halfway through today’s walk, before reaching the historic walled town of Mansilla.
Overnight: Mansilla de las Mulas
Day 5: Mansilla de las Mulas to León
Walk from Mansilla de las Mulas to León (18 km)
Cross the 13th-century Puente Castro bridge over the River Esla into León. Spend your evening taking in the city’s sights and enjoying its tapas scene.
Overnight: León
Day 6: León to Astorga
Walk from León to Astorga (~25 km walked, with included route transfer)
Depart León toward La Virgen del Camino and walk through San Martín del Camino to Hospital de Órbigo. Continue into Astorga to visit the Santa María Cathedral and Gaudí’s Episcopal Palace (a short transfer is included along this 46 km stage).
Overnight: Astorga
Day 7: Departure from Astorga
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before check-out. Onward travel connections or private transfers can be arranged with UWalk upon request.

Can I combine Stage 3 and Stage 4 into one continuous trip?
Yes! Stage 3 ends in Calzadilla de la Cueza and Stage 4 starts in Calzadilla, making it seamless to chain both stages together.
Luggage & Baggage Transfer

How does daily luggage transfer work?
Your main suitcase or duffel bag (1 piece per person, max 20 kg) is transferred directly between your accommodations each day. Simply leave your labeled bag at hotel reception by 8:00 AM, and it will be waiting at your next hotel by early afternoon.

What should I carry during the day?
A light 20–30L daypack is all you need. Pack 1.5L of water, daily snacks, sun protection, a light waterproof jacket, your Pilgrim Passport (Credencial), and cash/cards for local cafes along the trail.

Which airports are best for Stage 4?
For arrival in Calzadilla, fly into Madrid (MAD) or Valladolid (VLL) and take bus/train connections to Sahagún or Palencia. For departure from Astorga, train or bus services run to Madrid (MAD), Santiago (SCQ), or Asturias (OVD). Private driver transfers are available through UWalk on request.
