Why We Chose a Walking Holiday in Portugal
I came to walking later in life and quickly found that steady days outdoors suited me. A walking holiday felt like the right way to stay active while seeing more of the Algarve.
As regular visitors to the Algarve, we decided to do something different. Rather than slip into holiday lethargy, we opted for a self-guided walking holiday with U Walk.
When Is the Best Time to Walk in Portugal?
Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable times to walk in the Algarve, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds than summer. This trip took place in autumn, when the region still offered bright sunshine without the strongest summer heat.
Our itinerary was based near Tavira, the Venice of the Algarve.
Tavira, the Venice of the Algarve – A Walking Base Worth Knowing
Tavira is a historic town east of Faro, shaped by Phoenician, Roman, Moorish and Christian influences. The Gilão River runs through Tavira into the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a landscape of canals, marshland, islands, and sandy beaches.
Ria Formosa and Wildlife
Tavira Island has a long sandy beach. The surrounding salt pans, marshes and lagoons attract a wide range of birdlife.
Walkers can move between historic streets, estuary views, sandy islands and working salt pans within a relatively compact area.
Landscapes and Terrain
A single itinerary can combine beaches, orange groves and hillside paths. The routes described here range from about 13 km to 17 km, giving you options for different walking days.
Two Algarve Walks from Tavira
On day 1, we walked from Cacela Velha to Cabanas. The 14 km route began with a visit to a cemetery and finished at a wine bar in Tavira.
The following day, we completed the Ilha de Tavira loop via Santa Luzia. The 17 km route included a walk through Tavira, the salt pans, a ferry to the island, 4 km along the beach and a train ride back to the mainland.
Autumn sunshine made both routes especially enjoyable.
Together, the architecture, local history, wildlife and changing landscapes created a varied walking challenge with plenty to see along the way.
Beyond the Algarve: Portugal’s Best Walking Regions
Portugal offers far more than the eastern Algarve. Coastal routes, vineyard paths and mountain trails create very different walking experiences across the country.
Rota Vicentina and the Fishermen’s Trail
For a guided option, our Rota Vicentina walking holiday follows selected sections of Portugal’s southwest coast through the Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
The full Fishermen’s Trail covers 226.5 km across 13 stages. Cliff paths and long sandy sections make parts of the full route physically demanding. The Via Algarviana offers a separate inland route across the Algarve.
Douro Valley and Northern Portugal
Northern Portugal offers vineyard paths, river views and mountain terrain. The Douro Valley is known for steep vineyard terraces above the river, while Peneda-Gerês is Portugal’s only national park, with granite peaks, forests and traditional villages. Porto can also serve as a city base before or after a longer walking route.
