Escape to the heart of Northern Hungary on a 7-night guided walking adventure along the dramatic Danube Bend. Nestled where lush mountains and ancient forests meet the majestic Danube River, this scenic region offers some of the most breathtaking countryside in Central Europe.

Base yourself in the historic town of Visegrád—once Hungary’s 15th-century ‘Camelot’—famous for its dramatic hilltop fortress and Renaissance ruins. From here, we’ll set out on daily guided treks to explore region highlights like Nagymaros, Zebegény, and the majestic Pilis Mountains. Plus, enjoy a half-day tour of vibrant Budapest led by an expert local guide.

Day 1

Fly into Budapest, where you’ll be met by our local host and transferred to our 4-star base in Visegrád—a historic castle town nestled along the Danube Bend. Settle in, meet your group, and look forward to the week ahead.

Day 2:

Visegrád Hills & The “Castle in the Sky”

We begin with a brief orientation stroll along the Danube before heading into the lush Apátkúti Valley. Walk past serene arboretums, mountain streams, and waterfalls, taking in the unique “Kneipp experience” over smooth riverbed stones near the Ördögmalom Waterfall.

  • Moderate Route: Return to the hotel after the valley loop for a relaxing afternoon exploring Visegrád at your own pace. (7.5 km | ~5 hrs | 200m incline)

  • Challenging Route: Continue higher past the historic Solomon Tower up to Visegrád Castle, perched high above the river for sweeping views across the bend. (17.5 km | ~6.5 hrs | 450m incline)

Day 3:

River Crossing & St. Mihály Mountain

Cross the Danube by ferry to Nagymaros for a day of scenic riverside and woodland hiking. Both routes end in the charming, artistic village of Zebegény before returning to Visegrád by ferry.

  • Moderate Route: Take a gentle trail connecting Nagymaros and Zebegény through peaceful woodlands and quaint rural paths. (10.5 km | ~5.5 hrs | 200m incline)

  • Challenging Route: Take on a steeper ascent up St. Mihály Mountain, rewarded with incredible bird’s-eye panoramas of the Danube’s famous horseshoe bend. (17 km | ~6.5 hrs | 450m incline)

Day 4:

Dramatic Gorges & Pulpit-Rock Views

Today’s hikes showcase the region’s dramatic geological features, home to rare wildlife like the saker falcon, wildcats, and pine martens.

  • Moderate Route: Hike up to the iconic Prédikálószék (“Pulpit-Rock”) lookout point for stunning open views over the Danube Bend, descending via a smooth forest trail. (10.5 km | ~6 hrs | 320m incline)

  • Challenging Route: Tackle the Rám Gorge (Rám-szakadék), climbing through a thrilling canyon with ladders and stream crossings before visiting the heart-shaped Rám Rock. (11 km | ~6 hrs | 370m incline)

Day 5:

Free Day at Leisure

Take a well-deserved rest to recharge your legs. Spend your day relaxing at local thermal baths in Leányfalu, exploring the nearby historic town of Vác, or enjoying a boat ride along the river. Our local guide will be available to suggest options for your free day.

Day 6: The Summit of the Pilis Mountains

We take a short transfer to Pilisszentkereszt to explore the highest point of the Transdanubian Mountains.

  • Moderate Route: Begin at a higher elevation and follow shaded, gentle forest paths up to the Pilis Peak before descending back to the village. (11 km | ~5 hrs | 170m incline)

  • Challenging Route: Start lower along Dera Creek and take a steeper climb directly up to the summit. Both groups meet at the top for a picnic lunch with expansive views. (13 km | ~6 hrs | 500m incline)

Day 6:

Buda Hills & Budapest Sightseeing

Head south to Budapest for a day that combines mountain walking with urban discovery. Both groups hike up to scenic observation towers overlooking the city, then board the unique Children’s Railway (Gyermekvasút) through the forested Buda Ridge. Afterwards, descend into the city for a guided sightseeing tour of Hungary’s vibrant capital.

  • Moderate Route: (8 km | ~3 hrs | 200m incline)

  • Challenging Route: (12 km | ~4 hrs | 250m incline)

Day 7:

Buda Hills & Budapest Sightseeing

Head south to Budapest for a day that combines mountain walking with urban discovery. Both groups hike up to scenic observation towers overlooking the city, then board the unique Children’s Railway (Gyermekvasút) through the forested Buda Ridge. Afterwards, descend into the city for a guided sightseeing tour of Hungary’s vibrant capital.

Day 8:

Homeward Journey

Transfer to Budapest Airport for your flight back to Ireland, taking home wonderful memories of Hungary’s countryside and historic landscapes.
