When is the best time to go?
This trip is available from April through October and can start on any day of the week, subject to availability.
Note on summer weather: Temperatures during July and August can get very hot for trekking. We highly recommend traveling during spring or autumn for the most comfortable walking conditions.
How hard is the walking?
The walking is rated as moderate. You will average around 4 to 6 hours of walking per day (excluding rest stops) over hilly to mountainous terrain. The trails consist mostly of unpaved tracks, footpaths, mountain trails, and a few paved village roads. Some gorge sections feature stony and uneven ground.
How do I get to the starting point in Vamos?
-
From Chania Airport (CHQ): The nearest airport is Chania, located about 30 km from Vamos. You can take a taxi directly from the airport, or we can arrange a private arrival transfer for you.
-
From Heraklion Airport (HER): Direct public buses run from Heraklion city to Chania and stop at the nearby village of Vrysses. A taxi transfer from Vrysses to Vamos is included as part of your package.
-
By Ferry: Daily overnight ferries run from Piraeus (Athens) directly to Chania port.
How do I depart at the end of the trip?
On Day 8, you will take a short 20 minute morning ferry from Loutro to Chora Sfakion. From there, public buses and private transfers connect directly to Chania or Heraklion airports. If you have an early morning flight, we recommend booking an extra night in Chania or Heraklion at the end of your trip.
How does luggage transfer work?
Your luggage is transported daily between your accommodations so you only need to carry a small daypack while walking. This includes ferry transfers on the coastal legs between Sfakia and Loutro.
