Day 1: Arrive Estella

Day 2:

Estella to Los Arcos (21 Km)

Today’s walk is relatively flat and easy. Leaving Estella via Plaza San Martin you pass through a gate depicting the Crucifixion. Close to the village of Azquata you will be at the highest point of the day and be sure to eat and drink and stock up as there are no more village stops for the last 12Km to Los Arcos.

Day 3:

Los Arcos to Logrono (28 Km)

Today is a long day and hilly with lots of ups and downs. You will also get food for thought when you look at the inscription on the Cemetery outside Los Arcos which translates as “I was once what you are, and you will be what I am.”

After an interesting day’s walking you will arrive in the town of Logrono which is the capital of the world famous La Rioja with a population of over 150,000. It is a university city and the centre of the regions wine industry. Enjoy!

Day 4

Logrono to Najera (22Km)

Leaving Logrono it becomes obvious that you are in La Rioja, the rest of the day is mostly through the vineyards that produce the beautiful wine that has made this area famous.

Day 5:

Najera to Santo Domingo (21 Km)

The Camino Frances leaves Najera behind the Monastery of Santa Maria la Real. The route goes uphill along a dirt track through pine trees and across farmland heading towards Azofra, where you can stop for breakfast and coffee.

On the outskirts of Azofra there is a botanical garden and park dedicated to La Virgen de Valbanera, the patron saint of La Rioja, and close by are the remains of the Fuente de los Romaneros, a medieval pilgrim fountain.

Most of today’s walking is through farmland well away from roads.

Day 6:

San to Domingo to Belorado (22Km)

Today’s walk is close to the road N120. Most of the day it runs alongside and occasionally diverts into towns and across fields. The route is fairly easy going underfoot with mostly gravel paths and typical farm tracks.

Day 7:

Belorado to San Juan de Ortega (24KM)

Most of the day is easy walking until you leave Villafrance where the route starts to climb into the Montes de Oca. It is steep in places and the day starts at 800M and climbs to 1150M and back down to 712M. The trees provide welcome shade for this section of the Camino.

Day 8

San Juan de Ortego to Burgos (23Km)

Today is the last day’s walking of this stage and is apparent that you are coming close to a major town. You will pass an old army base and in the early part of the day you will pass through a few small villages where you can stop for food or coffee.
